Encouraging healthy eating in the workplace

Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet comes with many benefits, from supporting a strong immune system to reducing instances of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. But did you know that a healthy diet can also contribute to higher energy levels, improved concentration, increased productivity, and reduced absenteeism at work? As an employer, helping to educate your team on proper nutrition and encouraging healthy eating habits can have a direct impact on your business.

Here are a five simple ways you can encourage your employees to eat well and maintain a healthy diet at work and at home:

  1. Share helpful resources about nutrition. Help educate your team on the importance of healthy eating and how to maintain a healthy diet by sharing articles and other nutrition-focused resources in your employee communications and on your company intranet. This article about getting more fruits and vegetables into your diet might be a good place to start!
  2. Encourage your employees to register for our Eat Right for Life educational programme. Allshores is pleased to offer a free, dietician-led nutritional education series to help your employees make more informed decisions about what they eat. Available to all Allshores health plan members, this programme covers a variety of topics, from the importance of micro- and macro-nutrients to understanding why diets don’t work and learning how to read nutrition facts panels. Our next Eat Right for Life series will be announced through our monthly wellness newsletter.
  3. Provide healthy snack options in the office. Instead of high-calorie, high-sugar snacks and baked goods, consider offering employees more nutritious options, such as fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, and yogurt, and ensure that vending machines and your cafeteria also feature healthy options. Try to prioritise high-protein, nutrient-dense foods with little added sugar to help your team feel satisfied and energised without an afternoon crash.
  4. Choose healthy catering options for meetings and team-building events. When you’re planning team outings, meetings, or events that might involve food, consider choosing a location or caterer that offers nutritious menu items such as hearty salads, soups, grain and veggie bowls, smoothies, porridge pots, and other healthy options.
  5. Set up an environment that encourages healthy eating. Ensure your office break rooms have microwaves, refrigerators, and space for your employees to store and prepare their home-cooked meals. This makes it easier for employees to bring homemade, healthy meals for lunch instead of having to go out and buy something that might not be as healthy.

These are just a few ways you can help educate your employees and encourage them to prioritise their nutrition. Don't forget to encourage your employees to register for our next available Eat Right for Life series, which will be announced through our monthly wellness newsletter.
